A friendly chess club for Sussex students of every level - from complete beginners to experienced players.
About Us
Chess at Sussex
Whether you want to learn the rules, play a few relaxed games after lectures, improve seriously, or meet people who also love chess, you are welcome here.
Weekly Chess
Drop in for casual games, analysis, puzzles and competitive practice. You do not need a rating or tournament experience.
Socials
Meet people away from the board too. We run society socials and relaxed events throughout the academic year.
Competitions
Play internal events, team chess and other competitive opportunities when you want something more serious.

New to chess?
Perfect. You do not need to know openings, notation or have a rating. We are happy to help you get started.
Already competitive?
You will find plenty of stronger players for serious games, analysis and preparation alongside the casual side of the society.
What should I bring?
Just yourself. If anything changes about a session, Instagram is the best place to check for the latest society update.
Join Us
Your first club night is easy
There is no trial, rating or experience requirement. Come along on a Tuesday, find us in Room T.B.C. and play as much or as little chess as you like.
Just turn up
You do not need to message us beforehand. Come by yourself or bring a friend - either is completely fine.
All levels welcome
Complete beginner, casual player or experienced tournament player: there will be people to play and learn with.
